Review by Stacey

Eruption is mainly set on the Hawaiian island called The Big Island. On the island, a huge volcano, Mauna Loa, is rumbling and the Volcanologists who study the island’s volcanoes are worried there are only days until it does. The eruption would be bad enough for the island but the team soon learned that it may also wipe out mankind if they don’t help where the lava flow will go.

Underground deadly tanks filled with herbicides have been stored for decades with only the military in the know. The tanks are too fragile to move and yet if they are burst open by the eruption or the lava flow the deadly radioactive toxins inside will be enough to wipe out all vegetation across the world and with that mankind too.

It is up to the scientist to work with the government, secretly, to come up with and implement a plan to save the world and they only have a few days to do it.

Eruption was first thought up by author Michael Crichton. He had written some of the book before he passed away but it never came to light. He had a love of volcanoes and was so passionate about them that his widow knew she needed someone to work on the book and bring it to life and she trusted James Patterson to be that person.

The plot is engrossing and fast-paced. The chapters are short and I loved the countdown until the eruption at the start of each chapter. I’m not sure where this book sits genre-wise, possibly action or adventure, some may say thriller but it didn’t feel like one to me. However, that doesn’t matter, what does is how fabulous it is.

There are multiple storylines that all weave themselves around the main one of the eruption waiting to happen. There is plenty of science talk but nothing too hard to comprehend. In fact, I learned a lot about volcanoes and lava flow from this book.

Overall, Eruption is a truly exciting and intense book that I adored from cover to cover. Once I began I didn’t want to put it down and I read it in just two days. It has been exceptionally well written and you can definitely feel both writer’s input in the plot. I can see this becoming a movie in the future too.
