Synopsis
A delightful book about how to be a kind and thoughtful friend, perfectly pitched for children starting school.
Friendships are precious, but they can also be tricky to navigate – especially when you’re little. In this charming and supremely sensitive book, we meet Sukie and Joe: two children making friends for the first time.
With words by Amanda McCardie, who has studied child development at the Tavistock, and pictures from Colleen Larmour, a rising star, Making Friends is the perfect tool for talking to very young children about friendship and everything that goes with it, from meeting new people to celebrating differences and standing up for one another.
Review by Stacey
When Sukie’s family move to a new area she has to attend a new school. She is apprehensive about going and feels small and alone. Soon though her classmates warm to her and welcome her to their friendship groups – Sukie is making friends.
Making Friends is a wonderful book for any young child that is either about to go to school for the first time or is moving to a different school. Through Sukie’s story children can see how little gestures help children to gain new friends and how at primary school it is pretty simple (usually) to make friends.
The story covers lots of subjects from being kind to supporting and trusting. There is even an index at the back of the book that shows you where all of these subject areas are in the book.
The illustrations are bright, colourful, and full-page, plus they emphasise the plot perfectly and show all the emotions the children are feeling.
This is a book that will reassure a child who might be feeling anxious about attending a new school. It is a book to make them feel comfortable and ready to embrace their first day.
