Review by Stacey
Retreat is a non-fiction book by author/blogger/journalist Sally Brockway that is all about having some downtime and relaxing or retreating in whichever way you find helps give you that balance we all need in life.
The book is split into three sections:
– Retreat at Home
– Retreat to Nature
– Retreat Away
Within each section are between 20-26 chapters, featuring topics on how to create a downtime habit, creating a sensory garden, forest bathing, meditation, and personal development amongst many more.
The book is quite small which I wasn’t expecting, but then the measurements are on the selling pages for you to see, not something I tend to check. It contains some amazing photographs and the book feels calming, warm, and cosy whilst you read.
Some of the topics were quite basic and didn’t teach me anything I didn’t already know, such as creating a spa bathroom by using candles, spa music on speakers, etc. Something I have been doing for years. Other topics were things I have never tried such as creating your own home fragrance or warming heat-pack.
My favourite part of the book was about the garden and creating gardens that awaken your senses, so with flowers that have certain scents or feels to them. A water feature to listen to the rippling sound as it flows or making bird feeders to entice the birds into your garden. Also to consider the flow of the garden and what you can touch from where you sit. After reading this book I have actually purchased a Chinese wind chime with its delicate sounds that don’t overpower.
Retreat is a book that you can read from cover to cover or select the pages that you feel work or would mean something to you and skip over those that don’t. It is a book that you can delve into time and time again and also use to make your own items from spa products to full meals. It is a delightful book that made me feel calmer just reading it, nevermind implementing any of the techniques.
If you need some downtime, self-care, some ‘me-time’ then this is certainly a book to help you achieve that in many different ways.
I definitely need to find some more me time. Retreat sounds like a nice book with some ideas that I might not come up with myself.
I think I need this book in my life. Thanks for sharing.
