Bobby Cooper is a dedicated New York homicide detective eager to solve every case. Now, he has a murder that he especially wants to solve—his own!
How’s that? Cooper is dead, right? Yes, and he even had an official police department funeral. So, it’s not precisely Bobby who returns to help his erstwhile partner, Josh Watson, find the man who killed him. It’s his ghost.
Nobody but Josh can see or hear Bobby in his ghostly form, leading to some unusual situations and strange looks for Josh. Their united efforts succeed, however, and they identify Cooper’s killer. Jailing the murderer proves elusive, though. His organization snatches him from police custody and he is soon on a plane to Cartegena, Colombia.
Josh (and ghostly Bobby) follow their man to Colombia. Josh connects with “clean” members of local law enforcement to go after the killer. But there’s a complication: Cartegena detective Christina Rodriguez finds Josh attractive, and the feeling is mutual. But Josh also cannot forget Jaqueline Bradshaw, the enticing psychologist tasked with helping him cope with Bobby’s murder.
Reading Shadow of Justice requires substantial suspension of disbelief. Few of us encounter spirits of the dead in our daily lives. However, the concept works well in the book, even introducing occasional humor to lighten the mood.
The book contains plenty of action, some of which is slightly over the top. For instance, it is difficult to believe that a foreign police department would allow an American detective (and an off-duty one at that) to join in sensitive operations. Yet, the storyline and pace capture the reader to a point where such practicalities hardly matter.
Anyone who likes a good police story with action and drama thrown in will enjoy this book. And be prepared for a surprise at the end.
