At three years old Irini Harringford was packed off to live with her aunt and uncle, with no explanation as to why. All the little girl knew was that her mother and father had kept her older sister, Elle, and that she was to be kept away from her.

Over the years Irini tried many times to hide from her sister, but Elle always found a way to find her, starting off when Irini was still in school. This time had been the longest, six successful years since Irini had heard from her sister. That was until she received a phone call in the middle of the night from Elle, calling to say that her mother had died, and that Irini was to attend the funeral in Horton, Scotland, where the family lived.

Cautiously Irini decides to go to Horton, not just for the funeral, but with the intentions of discovering the truth about why she was given away. Unfortunately, sometimes the truth can be hard to swallow!

My Sister is one of those books that asks a question, and then leaves you dangling. It has that pull factor to it, pulling you into the lives of two very different women, both with complicated lives, yet both utterly captivating. It will have you wanting to flip to the back of the book to discover what the big secret really is, yet you know that you must not, or you will ruin your enjoyment.

Irini and Elle are frighteningly realistic. The mind games that Elle plays, and the powerful hold that she has over her sister is what keeps the audience engaged with the story. These two are both very compelling characters, dealing with numerous compelling challenges from beginning to end.

The need to know why Irini was given away is always at the forefront of the plot. It will have you fore-guessing lots of reasons why, but I can guarantee you may get close, but you will not be able to predict the full, detailed truth.

Ms. Adams’ writing is simplistic, yet it makes an emotional impact on you. The pace of the book is perfectly-balanced throughout, and my attention was caught from the first page. The psychological aspect will taunt you, and may even disturb or unsettle you, especially with Elle’s twisted ways.

A highly-addictive and unpredictable book that is a must read for 2017. If I can find one fault with it, it is that I would have liked the ending to have played out a little longer.
