Synopsis
You thought she was safe. You were wrong . . .
Lauren can’t wait to see her daughter again, to pick her up from university at the end of her first term. But when she arrives at her hall and knocks on the door to her room, a stranger opens it.
At first, Lauren thinks she must have the wrong room, or the wrong floor. Maybe even the wrong building.
But she soon realises the truth: Evie’s not there. She hasn’t been there for weeks. So where is she?
Review by Clive
T. M. Logan certainly knows how to write a page-turner! The Daughter caught my attention from page one and held it throughout.
A child leaving home for the first time usually causes some anxieties. For most, the parental concerns are unfounded but on occasions things can go wrong. Most of The Daughter is written in the first person from Lauren’s viewpoint and Logan does an excellent job of telling us just how worried she is.
The author’s name meant nothing to me as I tend to read first and research afterwards. Whilst reading I was convinced that The Daughter would make a great TV mini-series so I was not surprised to learn that two of Logan’s previous eight novels have already been filmed for TV.
From that very worrying moment in the hall of residence we follow Lauren as her search for Evie takes her to various locations around the south east of England. The action is non-stop as Lauren, in her desperation, takes more and more risks to achieve her aim. Although the plot fits into just a few days it has many twists.
The desire to keep reading is encouraged by Logan who either finishes chapters with a hook or, even more blatantly, just starts a new page with a chapter number in the middle of a passage for no apparent reason other than to frustrate the reader who likes to pause a reading session at the end of a chapter.
The cover of The Daughter describes T. M. Logan as “Master of the up-all-night thriller” and I can see why. On his website he comments on the thousands of his five star reviews. Well, here is another.

His 2025 novel, THE DAUGHTER, opens as Lauren arrives to pick up her daughter from university at the end of her first term – only to find a stranger answering the door. Evie’s not there, has not been there for weeks, in fact she’s vanished without trace. With her young son in tow, Lauren sets off on a desperate search into the dark heart of London to find Evie before she’s lost forever…
