Synopsis
A cosy children’s Christmas book written and illustrated by the inimitable Jane Chapman.
It’s almost Christmas, and all the animals are out in the wood to pick the perfect tree. “Ours is little, just like me!” beams Cubby. Carefully, she and Daddy dig up the tree, put it in a pot and take it home. Cubby quickly grows very attached to Little Tree. She sings it songs and reads it stories. And on Christmas Day there’s one last present – a bright red ribbon to go round Little Tree’s pot. But when Christmas is over, and Little Tree has to go outside, Cubby is so sad! Luckily, Daddy has the perfect solution: Little Tree will live right outside in the garden until next winter, when the Christmas magic can start all over again.
This heartwarming festive story is tied up with a subtle environmental message! Just like The Christmas Pine by Julia Donaldson and Victoria Sandøy, The Christmas Eve Tree by Delia Huddy and Emily Sutton, and Dasher by Matt Tavares, The Littlest Christmas Tree is a true modern classic.
Review by Stacey
The Littlest Christmas Tree by Jane Chapman is a heart-warming Christmas tale about a little bear cub and his dad who are searching for the perfect Christmas tree to cut down and take home with them. It doesn’t take long for the bear cub to choose which tree he wants but once Christmas is over, he is sad that the happiness the tree brought him over Christmas will be no more until his dad has an idea.
The story is very sweet and quite old-fashioned. The illustrations are calming, full-page, and beautiful to look at. The moral behind the story is perfect, though I don’t agree with the idea of planting and digging up the same tree year each year, but many people do it.
Overall, The Littlest Christmas Tree is a fabulous story that will get youngsters in the mood for the festive period whilst showing them that happiness is not found in objects.
