Review by Stacey
Where’s Winston? by Artie Knapp is a children’s picture book about a flock of geese getting ready to migrate for the winter. Troop 408, led by their leader Ralph, is almost ready to fly off for some winter sun when they realise one of their members is missing.
Winston had decided not to join the flock this year due to him caring for an injured bird who had no one else to look after it.
The story is about putting others first, doing what is right, and taking responsibility, as well as a few life lessons that the flock learns about their code of silence when on migration.
The illustrations are bright, full-page, and showcase the plot perfectly. The storyline whilst cute and heart warming is a little haphazard at times and I did wonder when one of the flock Carl is brought into the tale as to where it was going. I think the Winston tale would have worked perfectly well without the Carl parts and could even have focussed on how Winston and the little injured bird coped on their own throughout the winter and Winston’s nursing skills.
Overall, a pleasant children’s book that provides an interesting story with loveable characters and plenty of humour too.
