Synopsis

Think that being a witch is just about pointy hats, relaxing broomstick rides, and gathering around the steamy cauldron singing spooky songs? Well, think again.

Betty is brewing her first ever potion! And potions need ingredients – ingredients that can only be found in the WILD. So Betty, with her mum by her side, soars off into the magical, moonlight night to bravely gather her wicked and wonderful supplies: vampire fangs, fairy dust, werewolf whiskers, and more. The only problem is, she might have to come face-to-face with a few monsters – a few treacherous monsters! – along the way…

With rollicking read-aloud rhymes from Michelle Robinson, and spellbinding art from Briony May Smith, this is a funny, edge-of-your-broomstick adventure for aspiring witches and wizards everywhere.

Review by Stacey

Witch in Training by Michelle Robinson is a young children’s rhyming picture book that is perfect for this spooky time of year. It is about A4 in size and has a magical sparkly cover, though no sparkles within.

The book features a young witch learning to collect ingredients and make spells, however, she forgets to read the small print!! Along her journey on her broomstick, she also gets herself a new pet rat.

The story is super cute and the pages are filled with glossy amazing artwork that captures the essence of the story entirely, though I am so past witches being given green faces. The rhyme is near to perfect too.

Overall, if you are looking for a book for a young child this Halloween, Witch in Training would be perfect.

When I’m not up to my knees in nappies, I write children’s books. I also spend a fair amount of time eating chocolate. I try to write funny, read-aloud books that parents will enjoy as much as children – after all, if you have to share the same stories umpteen times, you may as well enjoy them.
